My chevy cruze is constantly getting a check engine light for p0299 with the car still driving relatively fine, will go off after about 50 miles ish and will come back on randomly sometime days, weeks, sometimes hours later. Yes it can do damage to the engine , and the engine mounts, also if you have a manual transmission it cause the clutch to wear out faster. Mine would drop boost to zero and cut the throttle to max 50%. It wouldn't build boost pressure and thus wouldn't get over 2k rpm.
